The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was living in the 4th century in an area in the present day Turkey. He was a generous man who loved children. He was very generous and popular, so his reputation rose constantly. Eventually people started to believe that he could perform miracles, thus devotion to him greatly increased. He became the patron saint of Russia, with his red cape, flowing white beard and his bishop’s mitre.

In Greece he is the patron saint of sailers, and in Belgium he is the patron saint of the children and travellers. After the Reformation, his devotees scattered around in Europe, but his legend remained particularly in Holland where his name was first Sint Nikolaas and then later on Sinteklaas. Eventually his name spread to American in the 17th Century where he then was known as Santa Claus.

Today, Santa Claus is famous all around the world as the kind, old man who brings Christmas gifts to the good children. Santa Claus has been widely used as a commercial eye catcher, particularly after 1930, when Coca Cola used him for the first time in their famous advertisements for their soft drink. In these ads he had a big, white beard, a large red coat, black boots, and an great laughter – just the way we know and love him also today.

Advent is a term that we’ve all heard about and know it is related to Christmas, yet not everybody knows its exact meaning. It is the four week period just between Thanksgiving and Christmas. All Christians celebrate Advent. The word actually means ‘the coming’. In the societies of the Roman empire, the word adventus referred to the arrival of a person of dignity and great power — a king, emperor, or even one of the gods. For Christians, Advent is the time when the church prepares for the coming of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ.
We are looking forward to the Christmas holidays season celebration. We can celebrate Advent either at the church or at home with the family.

To celebrate Advent we light 5 candles in a wreath, that sits on a candleholder. The first 4 candles are one for each Sunday leading to Christmas and the central, 5th candel is usually a larger one, white in color, that sits in the center of the wreath. Many times the 4 candles are purple in color (3 of them) while the 4th is pink, or all 4 are purple. The purple means repentance and the pink symbolizes joy. The main central candel is called the Christ candel and it is only lit on Christmas day. Many families when litting the candel read a few verses of scripture that are related to the meaning of the candle.

The actual wreath symbolizes a circle that has no beginning nor end. It is made of fresh plant material. The light represents Christ, who is showing us the way to righteousness.

Active Christians do special things to mark the holy Advent season. For example, various churches have Wednesday night services similar to those during Lent, only with a lot more praise, joy and songs.

Sometimes having cheap Christmas holidays is the best way to go. When the budget is already overstretched for the year, one needs to cut back a bit on spending. And Christmas is usually not the best way to do that. However, with a bit of thought, Christmas holidays can be come cheap, affordable and enjoyable at the same time. Here are some tips on saving money on Christmas gifts.

1. Instead of buying it, make it yourself. For children you can get lots of chocolates and candies and put them in a nice jar and wrap around it a colorful bow. Make some Christmas cookie or chocolate and use that as gift.

2. Ask your friends and relatives to help with the Christmas dinner. Everybody could bring a bit of something along, so there is less to buy all by yourself. One could bring the wine, somebody else some sweets, and yet somebody else groceries for preparing the food.

3. Choose cheaper gifts online. Going to a local boutique will cost you more than buying it online. Plus online you have a wider variety of choices and prices to select from.

4. Buy books as gifts instead of expensive articles. Books used to be great gifts for all occasions until the modern world caught up. Reintroduce buying books to have cheap christmas holidays.

5. Shopping online has also other advantages: there are many Christmas sales and clearances that you can benefit from. You find free shipping and discount prices at many online outlet stores, all you need is browse a bit around.

By using some of these tips you can have some great cheap Christmas holidays that you and your family and friends will grealty enjoy.

One of the most awaited events by everybody, including children, is Christmas. The Christmas holidays is the time when the whole family comes together, where friends that haven’t seen each other in a while get to meet again and where gifts are exchanged with joy. Everybody is expecting to receive gifts, and the fact that some of the people are actually adults, doesn’t make any difference.

Giving gifts for Christmas to friends and family is a way of showing them that you care. There are various ways to decide what to buy for Christmas, either based on what you know about them, their hobbies, preferences, or based on what you think that they will enjoy.

There are many things that one can give as Christmas presents, from electronics, to hobby supplies, to home appliances all the way to perfumes and art. If they are sports lovers, try to get some signed bat or an expensive golf club, and if you are gifting a woman, an expensive perfume will go a long way. Kinds will love games of all sorts, either the latest computer games, or various robots imitating the latest movie characters, everything is fair game.

No matter what you are getting your friends and family for Christmas holidays, if you put a bit of thought into it, you will make their Christmas an unforgetable one. But please make sure that you will not give your loved ones gifts that will give subtle hints of something that they need to change in their lives. For example, an overweight person would not like to get a book on losing weight, and a single person would definitely not appreciate a book on finding the right person.

Each year is different, yet each year is the same. People all over the world are buying their kids Christmas gifts. And each year people all over the world are looking for the latest Christmas gift ideas for their children. Shopping for your child is not easy when you’re not sure what is ‘in’ this year. As with everything else, what was popular last year might not be this year, and what is ‘in’ this year, next year will be a long forgotten fad. So how do you know what to buy your kid for Christmas?

The good news is, Christmas gifts for 2009 are especially interesting as there are a number of great ideas to surprise your kid with.

Number 1 for toddlers this year is Zippity Learning System. Moms will love this game too as it helps them learn in a fun way with their favorite Disney® characters. Also children will stay active with this game, so you can bet that they will be very eager to play this particular one over and over again.

For children ages 4-5 the Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush is a sure winner this year. If your child likes to pain, this game provides clean painting (no mess) with the use of a set of 6 paint colors and a cool magical paintbrush. It is fun to use this set as the paints remain clear right until the light brush applies them to a special paper. This is when the colors come suddenly to life. If your child likes Harry Potter, then they will feel they have just jumped in that magical world, when the flick of a brush makes magical things happen.

Every kid age 5 and up loves the Transformers. There’s just something about them that children are drawn to and the Transformers Optimus Prime figures is HOT this year. At less than $40 it will hardly break anyone’s bank and in return will make your kid’s Christmas a truly unique one.

So there you have it, a short list of what is hot in toys and games for small children this year. If you’re looking for toys and games for older children, here are a few recommendations:

Toys and Games for kids ages 8-11

toys and games for preteens

And who said that grownups cannot play? Here are some games for grownups

Finding the cool Christmas gift for your family and friends is not always easy. Everybody needs a different type of gift, and if you give the right person the wrong gift, you end up in troubles.

For example, a mother needs different gifts from a wife, a girlfriend needs different gifts from your children. And friends need different gifts based on their hobbies and interested as well. Truly not an easy task.

No matter who the person is, there are a few things in common though. First thing first, you need to know enough the person to know what they like mostly. What are their hobbies and interests. What smells, flavours and gadgets they like and what they are allergic to or couldn’t care less about.

If you’re looking for a cool Christmas gift for your wife, if she’s always in the kitchen and is a person who simply forgot to pamper herself lately, she might be enchanted to get a nice smelling expensive perfume. Something to show that you appreciate her as a woman as well, not only as a wife or mother of your children. Or maybe she couldn’t care much about perfumes and expensive clothes, but she is ooh-ing and ahh-ing for the last couple of months on that expensive kitchen gadget or tool that she wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. Or maybe she is a hobbyist photographer, by side that is. A latest model of a digital camera would come in perfectly and show her that you care about her and you love her.

If you’re buying a gift for your husband, depending on his hobbies, there are many things in the electronic department that could flare up his eyes and make him excited. A latest HDTV, or digicamera, or maybe a gorgeous watch he was eyeing the last few times you went out together shopping.

Buying gifts for your teenagers should not be a chore either. There are many things they love, from the latest iPod or Kindle, to those latest gadgets that teenager so much love. Or maybe a full blown laptop of the latest model? Whatever it is, make sure that it suits her or his style. If he is an internet addict and doesn’t care much about the outside life, buying him the latest mountain bike will not warm his heart up at all.

So you see, no matter who your partner is and how many members your family has, buying a cool Christmas gift for them can be a pleasant exercise. It might be costly, true, but let’s face it, everybody is working up to that Christmas time when gifts are so freely given to each other. This is not the time to save on money, this is the time of giving and sharing and receiving with love.

Why not check out the Christmas Gifts store on this site and browse through the gift items that you can buy for your loved ones right now? Why delay buying the gifts until the last minute when you know everybody is in a rush, and as we also know, when we are more inclined due to buy the wrong gifts because we are running out of time? Click here to start early on buying the cool Christmas gift for your loved ones!

Christmas holidays is one of those times that we either love, or hate, or both. We love it because it brings us closer to our families, we get to meet family members and friends that we haven’t seen often times in a whole year. We get to gift out children and see their sparklink eyes shining when looking at their presents. We get to decorate the Christmas tree with our family and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. However, it is also one of those times that we hate at most. There is too much hustle to buy gifts, to clean the house, to organize everything, to be ready before the day. This is why we all dread the days coming up to Christmas. But if you know how to handle it, there is a way out of this stressful time.

First of all, you need to make a list of everything you know you need to get done. Write down all the gifts you need to buy, all the food items that you need to prepare that tasty meal. Does anyone of your family members or friends has any allergies, or are they vegetarian or need soemthing specific? You need to remember to write that down too. What about Christmas cards? The list of guests you want to invive for the occasion? Write all these down. And every day you remember something extra, jot it down too.

Once you have the list done, it’s time to start spreaking the work around. Noone is expecting from you to do everything on your own, except you and we all know we’re the strictest with ourselves. so it’s time for managerial work: delegate. Spread the work around, as there is plenty of it to do: from buying the christmas cards and gifts, to wrapping them, to decorate the Christmas tree, to bake cookies, everybody can help with something. Children love helping with baking cookies, so engage them.

When you’re out and about shopping, set a budget. We all know how we love to spend money during Christmas and that leaves us completely depleted for the next few months to come. So set a spending budget for the holidays and stick to it.

Finally, don’t forget to take time for yourself. You need somet time out for pampering yourself as well. Particularly if you have children, you need to rest, as the time leading up to Christmas is stressful as it is on its own. Get a babysitter and spend a night out with your girlfriends or with your husband. Go to bed early, take a good book to read, or have a romantic evening with your partner. It is well worth the time as it will give you extra energy to tackle the remaining time up to that dreaded (or wonderful) Christmas.

Christmas is one of those times when finally the entire family can get together. For many family members this is the only time in the year when they can see each other. If you have a big house, it’s great, but if not, gathering everyone for Christmas might be a bit daunting due to lack of space and privacy.

These days it is very easy to enjoy the celebrations at a rented cottage away from home. It is usually cheap enough per head that everyone is able to get together without breaking the bank. The best is to share the costs of the villa or cottage rented between the members of the family and friends, which means that the entire mini vacation becomes truly a good value for the money. There are so many cheap Christmas breaks that you can get your entire family in one place, that it’s really worth getting away from home for Christmas with the family.

There are many places that one can visit cheaply during Christmas. For example England is great as it is not only easily accessible, but during this time of the year, it’s quite cheap too.

Have you already been to Carribean? Being surrounded by a gorgeous scenery in a very laid back atmosphere among truly friendly locals, it is impossible to not enjoy your Christmas break on the islands.

How about right within the US? Charleston, in South Carolina is a great place for Christmas getaways. It is not expensive at all, the place is gorgeous and the food is exquisite. This is a very popular Christmas holidays destination every year.

No matter where you go, make sure to first find out the best prices, whether per person or per house rented (depending on the type of lodging you select) and check to see what extras it all includes. Checking out the place on the internet is usually a sure fire way to know the most about the place right away. If there is anything wrong with the place, it will be mentioned in one of the reviews online. Also if the place is great, it will also be raved about it online, so you know you are going to a good spot.
